The Value of Rooftop Photovoltaics

Installing photovoltaic (PV) panels on rooftops offers a multitude of benefits, making it an increasingly popular choice for businesses and institutions. Firstly, rooftop solar panels provide a sustainable and renewable source of energy, significantly reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering carbon footprints. This transition not only supports environmental goals but also offers economic advantages by reducing energy costs over time. Additionally, rooftop solar installations can enhance energy security, providing a reliable power supply even during grid outages. In the case of the VA Tomah Storage Facility, the adoption of PV technology has been transformative. The facility’s rooftop solar installation is projected to generate an impressive 2.6 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually, underscoring the substantial potential of rooftop solar in contributing to both operational efficiency and environmental stewardship.

Estimate

Analysis of the potential kilowatt (kW) generation for a rooftop solar installation on a 300’ x 300’ storage facility in central Wisconsin, we can follow these steps:

1. Calculate the Roof Area:
The area of the roof can be calculated using the dimensions.
2. Convert Square Feet to Square Meters:
Solar panel efficiency and capacity are typically measured in square meters.3. Determine the Usable Roof Area:
Not all the roof area will be usable for solar panels due to factors like shading, spacing, and roof obstructions. Typically, around 75% of the roof area might be usable.
4. Calculate the Potential Solar Panel Capacity:
The average solar panel generates about 200 watts per square meter (0.2 kW/sq m) under standard test conditions.
5. Adjust for Local Solar Irradiance:
Central Wisconsin has an average solar irradiance of about 4.5 peak sun hours per day. The actual energy generation will depend on this irradiance.
6. Convert to Annual Energy Generation:
Multiply the daily generation by 365 days to estimate annual output.

Summary:
• Potential capacity: 1,254.2 kW
• Daily energy generation: 5,643.9 kWh/day
• Annual energy generation: 2,060,033.5 kWh/year
These calculations give a rough estimate and actual figures may vary based on specific roof conditions, the efficiency of the installed solar panels, and local weather patterns.

The VA Tomah Storage Facility’s rooftop solar installation is estimated to save approximately $338,000 annually. This translates to a significant reduction in energy costs and an effective payback period of about 15 years, making it a financially viable and environmentally sustainable investment.

Note:
The proposed Wisconsin rate hikes would revise the payback to 13.3 years.
